This painting, on a beautiful piece of found wood, was inspired by the bombastic style of the great Kabuki actor, Ichikawa Danjuro Xll. The artist worked with him in his dressing room and back stage for more than 15 years, documenting him in drawings & paintings while he applied his make up and donned the gorgeous, many layered silk kimono costumes. He was a quiet, nice person, but completely the opposite on stage, where he played warriors and classic, alpha male characters. I hope that the viewer is enticed into the image by the multi layers of washi, newspaper, writing and the painting itself, with the warrior make up ( Kumadori style).
The wood piece was prepared by a fine furniture maker and has a well-designed hanger on the back.
